Golbourne to work on fashion and rehab after 'massive kick in the teeth'

Scott Golbourne says his season-ending injury was ‘a massive kick in the teeth’ but plans to spend the next few months getting back to full fitness and working on his side business as a fashion designer.

The left-back was a strong candidate for Barnsley’s Player of the Year but hurt his ligaments in his knee in the FA Cup game at MK Dons and,  despite being ‘adamant’ that he did not require surgery, was eventually persuaded to have an operation by the club’s medical staff.

He is currently on crutches but is expected to be fit for pre-season. Golbourne will spend a lot of time in the Oakwell treatment room but admits he will now get a few extra hours to work on his pending debut range of clothes. He has collaborated with girlfriend Keshia Hart on the collection, called Juliou Maurice, which is the couple’s middle names combined. It should be available online later this year.

Golbourne told the Chronicle: “My main focus will be on getting back playing as soon as possible, but I will be able to spend a bit more time working on my fashion stuff. It is good because it gives me something else to think about instead of getting frustrated about being injured all the time. I am quite excited about bringing out this collection. It won’t be run of the mill stuff. There will be a lot of over-sized t-shirts and sweaters which we have designed and tailored.”

He has designed plenty of shirts but it is for wearing the red of Barnsley that Golbourne is becoming increasingly well known after some fine displays this term.

“It has probably been the best season of my career,” he said.

“The manager has labelled me as one of the best left-backs in the Championship and I think that I am starting to make an impact on the league. I have come on leaps and bounds from the player that turned up at Barnsley in January last year. It is a massive kick in the teeth to be injured. I was quite upset initially but you have to get over it."
