Keith Hill says he felt 'sick and sad' after a Leeds United fan ran onto the pitch and made contact with Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on Friday.
Hill hit out at a section of Leeds supporters who then cheered the yob after the incident.
He said: "They shouldn't have been applauding him for what he did. They should have taken him to the police and said he was a disgrace to Leeds United Football Club.
"I don't think Chris Kirkland was at fault as he took one hell of a hit. A surprise hit like that can hurt you more than a hit that you're expecting. We all vilified Eric Cantona when he took matters into his own hands but maybe we should be applauding what he did."
Aaron Cawley, 21, was jailed for four months for the attack on Monday.
