Monday 15th October 2012
Tom Quinn on his way to scoring for Wath.

Wath-Upon-Dearne RUFC cruised to a 38-15 win in their derby with Barnsley on Saturday.

Wath finished behind Barnsley as both sides were promoted to Yorkshire League One last season but Wath have made a much better start to the season and are currently in third place while the Shaw Laners are fourth from bottom.

Wath flew into a 35-3 lead before Barnsley salvaged some pride with two late tries.

They had several chances before home captain Matthew Burrows crashed over following a big push by the pack. The try was converted by Tom Quinn who did so again just before half-time after a superb individual score.

Barnsley substitute Josh Smith got the visitors on the board and made it 14-3 at the break with an excellent long-range penalty.

Wath increased their lead early in the second half when Andy Barrass produced a superb dummy in fornt of the posts and dove over the line. Quinn converted to make the score 21-3.

Barnsley then had a player yellow carded for killing the ball in a ruck and Wath took advantage of their extra man to score their fourth try through Shane Brown. Barrass converted for 28-3.

The fifth try came from Ashley Rothery who burst through one tackle and held off another to touch down. Barrass converted again to make it 35-3 with ten minutes remaining. Barnsley fought back towards the end as Todd Cheetham touched down.

Josh Smith missed the conversion attempt but scored a try of his own which he converted to complete an impressive ten-point haul.
