Barnsley manager Keith Hill has slammed ‘red tape and bureaucracy’ that means John Rooney may not be able to sign for Barnsley until January.
The Reds want to sign the 21-year-old, brother of England star Wayne Rooney, until the end of the season. But his last club was Orlando City and Barnsley may not get permission from the American FA to sign him outside the transfer window.
“It is beaurocracy gone mad,” said Hill.
“This wouldn’t happen in any other line of work. We want to employ him and he wants to play for us. But the red tape and bureaucracy is stopping us.“
"John has a responsibility as a human being to support his family financially – he has just had a baby boy. He won’t need to ask his brother Wayne for help. I have two sisters but I wouldn’t want to ask them for money.”
