Barnsley lost their final pre-season friendly 1-0 against Crewe.
A goal from centre-half Adam Dugdale on 20 minutes sealed the win for the Railwaymen. Dugdale found himself unmarked in the penalty area following a Crewe free-kick from the right-hand side and headed the ball past Reds keeper Ben Alnwick.
Barnsley's best chances came through a Stephen Dawson long-ranger and a Chris Dagnall effort at the end of the second half.
New signing Tomasz Cywka impressed for the Reds and showed some neat touches, seeing one left-footed strike fly over the bar in the second half.
Reds boss Keith Hill handed starts to trialists Ibrahima Sonko and Scott Hogan, while Reuben Noble-Lazarus played the full 90 minutes at left-back.
