Steele says Mellis can replace Butterfield

Friday 6th July 2012
Jacob Mellis battles with Robbie Savage during his first Barnsley spell.

LUKE Steele has backed Jacob Mellis to fill the gap left by the departure of his namesake Jacob Butterfield.

Mellis played with goalkeeper Steele when he was on loan at Barnsley last year and returned to Oakwell on a permanent deal last month.Steele believes Mellis can replicate Butterfield’s success if he gets his attitude right.

“Jacob Mellis is in a similar position to the one Butts was in last summer,” Steele told the Chronicle.

“They can both do what ever they want in football if they put their mind to it but it is all about attitude. Match-winners like them are hard to come by. Butts was tipped for big things when I first came to the club in 2008 but his attitude was all wrong until last summer when the new manager came in.

“He is different now and I have huge faith that he will make it in the Premier League. Jacob Mellis can follow what Butts has done. He was up and down last time he played for us“It is down to him and how hard he wants to work. But if anyone can get the best out of him then Keith Hill and David Flitcroft can.”
