Barnsley Academy under 18s moved up to second in their league with a 3-0 win at home to local rivals Huddersfield Town on Saturday morning.
The young Reds are now two points behind Newcastle under 18s in the Premier League Academy Group D table but have played three games less than the Magpies.
While Barnsley scored three fine goals through Reuben Noble-Lazarus, Brad Abbott and John Stones, the visitors had the better chances and will feel the scoreline flattered the Reds.
Huddersfield hit the bar and forced a good save from Lukas Lidakevicius before Barnsley took the lead on 30 minutes with an excellent goal. Good passing by Macauley Shillito and Abbott allowed Erico Souza to break into the box on the left and whip in a low cross which Reuben tapped in.
Two minutes into the second half, Abbott made it 2-0 with a superb left-footed curler from 22 yards which hit the left hand post and floated in.
Captain Stones completed the victory with six minutes left when he headed in Shillito's fine left-wing free-kick.
