An incredible opening half hour gave Barnsley the cushion they needed to survive a late scare in their 3-2 win at home to Derby County on Tuesday night.
Barnsley were on magnificent form in the first 30 minutes as they totally overran their visitors and scored three goals.
Matty Done gave the hosts the lead on 11 minutes with a good finish from excellent debutant Korey Smith’s pass. Done was shoved over inside the area by Derby defender John Brayford after 24 minutes and Andy Gray slotted the penalty.
Five minutes later another superb pass from Smith allowed Scott Wiseman to get in behind the Rams’ defence and dink the ball over Derby goalkeeper Frank Fielding for his first Barnsley goal.
Fielding kept Derby in the match with some decent saves by the ten men in front of him looked totally overwhelmed by a Barnsley side who attacked constantly were totally in control.
Done was superb and tireless on the left flank, new man Michael Tonge’s setplays caused endless problems while Smith and David Perkins were sensational in central midfield.
Derby were better in the quieter second half and pulled two goals back. Jamie Ward smashed in a 30-yard free-kick in the 69th minute then Tom Carroll scored in injury time after an awful error from Luke Steele gifted the Rams’ possession.
