Keith Hill is in negotiations to bring in new players to Barnsley before the transfer deadline shuts on Tuesday night but will go into the loan market if he cannot make permanent signings.
The Barnsley manager had already brought in midfielders Michael Tonge and Korey Smith. He has had a bid rejected for Leyton Orient's midfielder Stephen Dawson but is hoping to obtain the player when his contract runs out in the summer.
Hill has denied any interest in Queen's Park Rangers' Clint Hill but says he is attempting to bring in new faces as soon as possible.
"I have a few irons in the fire but everyone is being poker-faced at the moment," said Hill.
"Clubs and players are keeping their cards close to their chest and waiting for others to make the first move.
"We have made our position clear with our targets and waiting to hear yes or no. If it is no then I will not be afraid to use the loan market until the end of the season."
French forward Yannick Boli will not be joining the Reds after his week-long trial.
