Barnsley assistant manager David Flitcroft has committed his future to the club and ruled out a return to former club Rochdale this season.

Rochdale parted company with Steve Eyre last month and Flitcroft had been suggested as a possible replacement as he worked there  as assistant manager under Keith Hill until coming to Oakwell last summer.

Flitcroft told the Chronicle: “There is an emotional attachment to Rochdale, where I had an incredible working relationship with the chairman and directors built on a foundation of absolute trust.

“Of course my name will get linked there because they are struggling and they want answers.“But I am focused on the job at Barnsley. I came here in the summer with Hilly and we are in this fight together, our immediate aim being to keep the club in the Championship.

“I am absolutely happy here and have no desire to leave. If the right opportunity came up then of course I’d have to consider it, and if I ever felt I wasn’t getting the level of respect that I deserved from players, fans or directors then I would think about leaving."
