Facelift plan for a grand old Steinway

STAFF and students at Wath Comp sixth form are on a grand mission to save a grand old piano.

The Steinway has been in the school since 1958 but thousands of music lessons and hundreds of school concerts have taken their toll.

It is still in full working order but the back has been battered and the polish has come off so the school is trying to raise enough money to have it restored and reconditioned.

Works will cost in the region of £10, 000 but to replace it would cost upwards of £50, 000. Jo Hole, head of music, said the piano is still a favourite fixture and they wanted to preserve it for the future.

She said: "It is one of the few remaining items from the old school. It is such a grand instrument and not many schools have them."

A series of fundraising events has been planned and the first one is a piano recital on Saturday July 17, 7pm. Past and present students and staff will perform and of course the Steinway will be used.
