THE Recovery Hub has been put forward as community group of the year in the Proud of Barnsley awards for the help and support it gives to people in recovery from substance misuse.

It has been nominated by support worker Julie Green, who runs it. She said nobody is judged and everyone has a good ear for listening, no matter what stage of recovery people are at.

"We help to build people's confidence and their ability to work as a team. It gives them focus, as well as aims and goals to achieve in their lives.

"We support them in everything, and if we can't help them then we signpost them to other agencies and services."

The hub is a drop-in service open to anyone who has either been through or is awaiting a detoxification. It offers support and guidance, activities and educational courses.

There is also a buddying service and advocacy for vulnerable people to offer additional support to those who may not want to go to appointments alone, and to talk about any issues or concerns they may have.

Julie said: "The group is run by volunteers and offers lots of activities, such as going out for meals, arts and crafts and we also run educational courses which people get certificates for. At the moment we're running an English GCSE course.

"We get quite a lot of people coming through, we had 18 on Wednesday. Some people stop hours and hours and some only stay for a short while."
