ARE you Proud of Barnsley? Then now is your chance to show it.

The Chronicle is launching the Proud of Barnsley awards 2014 in Friday's paper, giving you the chance to nominate the town's unsung heroes.

There are 13 categories ranging from Hospital Hero to Sporting Achievement, New Business Start Up to School of the Year.
Last year saw a host of worthy nominations and winners and almost 300 people attended the glitzy ceremony at the Holiday Inn in Dodworth in November.

From postman Kevin Hattersley, who was described by colleagues as a 'walking miracle' after battling four bouts of cancer, to volunteer Aubrey Martin-Wells who has been involved with the Royal British Legion for 25 years and organises the Festival of Remembrance.

This year's ceremony will be hosted by former Look North presenter Christa Ackroyd.

Christa presented Look North for 12 years alongside Harry Gration before leaving in July last year.

She said: "I'm really looking forward to hosting the Proud of Barnsley Awards. As a journalist, I'm always fascinated to hear people's stories and I'm certain there will be some brilliant ones emerging as the nominations start to come in."

Proud of Barnsley was launched by the Chronicle and Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis two years ago to inspire all generations to contribute to the good of the town and its people.

There are 13 categories: carer of the year, charity fundraiser of the year, children's champion, community group, exceptional achievement, new business start-up, hospital hero, school of the year, sporting achievement, sports team of the year, triumph over adversity, volunteer of the year and young superstar.

None of last year's nominees, finalists or winners see what they do as worthy of winning an award and don't consider what they do to be anything out of the ordinary. Those who nominated them disagreed.

If you think you know someone who fits the bill and goes that extra mile, then nominate them by filling in the form at the back of our special launch supplement in this week's paper.

Please ask the person/group for permission to nominate them for an award before putting them forward for the award.

I nominate Bobby Hassell for been a true role model to the community of Barnsley. He gives his own time and effort to help and serve the young people of Barnsley through the Faith and Football event that he holds, so that kids can enjoy free football while learning life skills. He is well respected both on and off the pitch and he is a true Barnsley hero to us all.
