Road death fears over parked cars

SHAFTON residents fear someone will be killed because of dangerously parked cars near Sainsbury's.

Motorists visiting the supermarket are parking on both sides of Highgate Way and around the junction of Highgate Way and High Street.

Villagers say this makes it difficult for other drivers to pull out and for pedestrians to cross the road safely.

Alistair Hemstock, of Barnfold Place, described the situation as appalling and illegal. "There is a great likelihood of an accident occurring as a result of this illegal parking. When this happens, hopefully it will only result in damage to property. My worry is that someone may be killed or injured. I am particularly concerned it could be a child making their way to school."

Coun Dave North said: "I agree with Mr Hemstock: there is going to be a serious accident. Coming off the High Street is horrendous and we are waiting for them to go through the legal process for the yellow lines.

"You wouldn't mind if there wasn't a car park but there is a great big one about 50 yards from the shop and people are too idle to walk round. It's irresponsible and unacceptable."
