Helping late hedgehogs get through the winter

A RETIRED couple's shed and garage have been taken over by a prickly bunch of 'teenage' tenants - hungry hedgehogs.

David and Fran Tomlinson are in charge of Barnsley Hedgehog Rescue and are overrun with 'autumn juveniles', hedgehogs who have left their mothers but are too small to survive hibernation.

And volunteers David and Fran, of Summer Lane, Royston, have taken on the task of fattening them for winter.

David said: "Mostly they should be born at the end of May and early June but because of climate change hedgehogs are tending to go on having litters. We have babies arriving now. They're not big enough to cope on their own and need to put on a lot of weight and the supply of food doesn't stand up to it."
