War hero Matthew returns

A BARNSLEY soldier came under machine gun fire and watched a rocket-propelled grenade skim over his head in Afghanistan. Lieutenant Matthew Clamp is a member of the first army battalion to complete a six month tour of Afghanistan or Iraq without losing a single man since the start of the Afghan conflict in 2001. Matthew, 25, arrived home in Pogmoor this week after leading his own platoon of 30 men on patrols across southern Afghanistan during a bloody period for the Army and the parachute regiment. He said: "It has been a deadly period for the regiment, so the fact that we went away for six months and had nobody killed is unbelievable." Full story, and some of Matthew's photographs from his tour, can be seen in this week's Chronicle.
