Art student gets award

A DESIGN student at Dearne Valley College has been awarded best individual piece of work created as part of a 25-year regeneration for Rotherham.

Kathrine Furniss, 18, from Thurnscoe, who has just completed a BTEC national certificate in art and design, is one of a number of artists asked to help with the project, Rotherham Renaissance.

Katherine said; "“When I was asked to design the hoardings I thought about how I would like to see Rotherham in the future.

"I decided to combine both the urban and rural environments of Rotherham to show both the leisure and business aspect of the town."

Kathrine was presented with a digital camera for best piece by a college student by Mike Smith, Executive Chairman of Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce.

Students from Thomas Rotherham College created artwork to represent the past of Rotherham with Rotherham College concentrating on the present development works happening in the town.

The artwork will be shown on the hoardings for the next two years while the building takes place.
