Mystery snap

MEMORIES has received information on a mystery football photograph included in an earlier Memories column.

Denis Clamp identified it as being the Hoyland Queens football team of 1934 and told us that his father Ted Clamp (far left, second row from the back) was chief coach.

He would have been 37 or 38 when the photograph was taken. As well as Denis, he was also dad to three daughters. Ted died in 1972.

Denis said that the pub team was very successful. We also received information about the team from Ted's grandson, John.

Margaret Graham contacted us to say her uncle Frank Stevenson was the team's goalkeeper (third left, second row from the back).

He lived in Parkin's Yard, Elsecar, and his football medal is still in the family. Sadly, he died when he was only 21.

Margaret's cousin, also named Frank Stevenson, has been able to supply some of the names of the other players and officials; They are: first left, back row: Eric Bamforth; second from the right, back row, Percy Jackson. First man on right, back row, Horace Beech; Second from the right, middle row, Chick Beech. Far right, middle row, Harry Beech. Third from the left, front row, believed to be Vin Hoyle.
