LIFELONG Barnsley fan James Kenneth Doyle, who lives in Belgium, has tracked down the burial place of Wilfred Bartrop, a member of Barnsley Football Club's triumphant Cup winning team of 1912.
Bartrop, an outside right, made his last appearance for Barnsley in 1913 before moving to Liverpool.
He made 160 league and 26 cup appearances for the Reds scoring a total of 17 goals after being transferred to Barnsley from Worksop Town. He died in 1918 on active service.
He lies with fallen colleagues in a small churchyard in the Belgian village of Warcoing. The words on his headstone read: Gunner W Bartrop. Royal Field Artillery."
Mr Doyle, who submitted photographs of the player's final resting place, said: "It took a little while to find, but as a lifelong Barnsley fan I am glad I did so."
Barnsley beat West Bromwich Albion in a replay at Bramall Lane 1-0 on April 24 1912 with a goal in extra time from Harry Tuffnell to claim the biggest prize in football.
Afterwards, celebrations took place in the town, particularly outside the Clarence Inn, Sheffield Road, the club's headquarters.
