A SOLDIER from Grimethorpe has set sail from Rio de Janeiro to Antigua as part of a leadership course with the Army.

Rachael Wheatman, 18 joined the Royal Signals earlier this week to make the journey as part of the Leadership Through the Atlantic British Army Expedition.

She has just finished her phase two training and is travelling aboard the 67ft yacht Discoverer, which is expected in Antigua at the end of May.

Rachael, a former St Michael's Church of England High School pupil, said: “It was a great surprise. I've only been in Europe and I've never sailed so I'm looking forward to learning how to do that.

“I might get seasick but I like open air and love being outside.”
