MMR jab given to baby by mistake

LYNDSAY Woolley took her eight- week- old son for his routine injections but he was given the MMR jab by mistake.

Instead of being vaccinated for tetanus, polio and dyptheria, Bailey Ray was given the MMR jab which is meant for children aged 13 months and over.

His parents Lyndsay and Rob, of High Street, Thurnscoe now face a ten day wait to see if there are any side effects and Bailey Rae could contract a small strain of measles or mumps. Lyndsay, 27, says health visitors at the Thurnscoe Health Centre on Hollybush Drive were responsible for administering the wrong injection and she was only told of the error by chance.

She had also taken son Tommy Lee, four, for his pre-school injections which did include MMR but maintains the consent form for Bailey Rae never mentioned MMR.

Lyndsay said: "I took my baby in first, they gave him his injection then I got my other son and they gave him his. I had to sign consent forms and signed for MMR for Tommy Lee but not for Bailey Rae. "The health visitor just disappeared and I could have just got my stuff and gone and not known any different. But I was dressing my son and it was the doctor that called me in.

"I was quite upset and crying, all I keep getting is it was a mistake but they shouldn't happen they should double check with babies."

A spokesperson for the PCT said: "The PCT sincerely apologises to the family for the upset caused. The error was noticed immediately and advice and assurance were sought straight away from the GP, community paediatrician and the Health Protection Agency"
