Blaze of glory for auxiliary menBy KATH PARKIN THERE was a good deal of interest shown in photographs of auxiliary firemen who manned temporary fire stations in Barnsley during the war.
When they were featured in an earlier Memories column several readers said they recognised a member of their family.
We have now received further photographs. One is of the Smithies team which became Light Trailer Pump champions in June 1942. They are, left to right: Ernest Felton, Fred Lisle, John Gough and Walter Harrison.
The second photograph: the Smithies NFS team which is understood to have been taken behind Cawthorne Village Hall.
We do not know the identities of all the personnel, but the ones which have been identified are: back row, fourth from left, Jack Roberts. Fourth and fifth from the left are Fred Listle and Walter Harrison respectively. Front row, left to right: Colin Hemingway, Eric Nicholson, Frank Devetti, Gilbert Taylor, Ernest Felton.
The photographs were loaned by Barry Jackson, of Cawthorne. His father, Walter, was a member of the AFS based at Wakefield Road, Smithies. |
