Old Halt pictures are just the ticket

GRIMETHORPE Halt, a tiny railway station at Grimethorpe, stirred happy memories for our readers after it was featured in the Chronicle's Memories column. The ‘Halt’ formed part of the Dearne Valley Railway line and connected Wakefield to the Doncaster area. There were ‘Halts’ at Ryhill, Grimethorpe, Great Houghton, Goldthorpe, Harlington, Denaby and Edlington. Gilbert Archer, 87, travelled on the steam train from Grimethorpe Halt many times and has special reasons to remember it. After his marriage to Laura in 1948, they caught the train from Grimethorpe Halt to Wakefield, then another to Blackpool where they spent their honeymoon. Gilbert was a railwayman for 48 years. His father, Harry, also worked on the railway. Mrs Jean Sargesson (nee Elliff) lived close to Grimethorpe Halt and the picture brought back happy memories of her childhood. “The local children used to stand on the bridge and watch the steam trains pass by.” For Jack Shaw, of Great Houghton, there was more nostalgia. He rode on the train with his mother, Sarah. “We got on the train at Great Houghton and got off at Ryhill from where we had a long walk to visit relatives at Wintersett.”
