Rabbit Ings to benefit from grant

By Alison Burkinshaw, Royston Reporter Tuesday 2nd September 2014
WILDLIFE around Rabbit Ings Country Park will soon be benefiting from new and improved wetlands thanks to £39,000 funding from The Veolia Environmental Trust.

The grant, awarded through the Landfill Communities Fund, will allow The Land Trust to carry out works to clear existing reed beds and waterways and create new areas of reed bed, providing extra space for birds and other wildlife to feed and nest.

The clearance will involve overgrown vegetation and debris, which is expected to include everything from old shopping trolleys to rusted relics of the site's industrial past.

Ground levels will be lowered to raise water levels and create a healthier reed bed system that will benefit a wide range of much loved species, including water vole and kingfisher.
