Alf and Pat Burns
A MAPPLEWELL couple will celebrate 60 years of marriage on Thursday.

Alf and Pat Burns, both 82, of Salcombe Close, have lived in the Barnsley area all their lives - except for three years when Alf worked as a London minicab driver chauffeuring the stars including Joan Collins, Frankie Howerd and Chaim Topol.

Alf, born at Cundy Cross, left school at 14 to work at Grimethorpe Colliery. He remained until he was aged about 30 when he embarked on a number of different driving jobs until retirement.

Pat was born at Smithies Lane, and also left school at 14 and worked at the handbag factory on Racecommon Road up until leaving to have a family.

They married at St Mary's Church, Barnsley, on August 14 1954 after meeting at the Ritz Cinema in town.

They have a son, Glyn, and two grandchildren Bethany and Brandon.

They will celebrate with a family barbecue organised by Glyn and daughter-in-law Janine.
