Housing plan for former school site

By Mike Cotton, Town Reporter Friday 18th July 2014

PLANNING permission has been granted for a major housing estate on the former Kingstone School site at Broadway.

A mixture of 163 two, three, and four bedroom houses will go on the site of the school, which closed in 2012 and merged with Holgate to form Horizon Community College.

Councillors voted unanimously in favour on Tuesday despite several objections from residents in Broomfield Close and Horsewood Close concerned about overlooking and loss of privacy.

The developer will provide almost £294,000 towards the cost of providing green space off-site, and £150,000 towards the refurbishment or expansion of local primary schools, with the education department yet to determine which.

The old SR Gent site would have been ideal for houses. The Kingstone site would have been ideal for a school. This is a prime example of "none joined up" thinking at the council. Maybe if they had done this Barnsley wouldn't be driven towards bankruptcy by trying to afford the PFI payback of the Horizon Academy.

Couldn't agree more, Gary.

Plus closing Kingstone and Holgate, two over-subscribed schools, each with 1,500 places, and replacing them with one 2,000 school was never a sane idea - not with the natural increases and decreases in birth rates, plus kids being forced to stay on until they are 18.

Now we have an unaffordable school. put in a place of high road congestion to start with, too small for purpose, and staff been given the boot to pay for the school buildings and services. And to top that, a load of houses being built that people can't afford to live in.

So the council has messed up the schools, messed up bin collection, wasted money on statues, killed the town centre, employed untrained litter nazis, messed up grass cutting killing the grass, wasted money on funded visits to Italy for "research", wasted money trying to make a halo round the town, wated money an failed broad band ideas and now wants to help force house prices down even more. Why the **** do people still vote labour in
