Pensioner warns of telephone scam

By Katia Harston, Chief Reporter Tuesday 22nd July 2014

A QUICK thinking Barnsley pensioner is warning people to be on their guard after he was targeted by telephone scamsters.

Retired electrician Alan White, of Mawfield Road, Redbrook, had a call from a person who said he worked for a telephone company who were offering a device which blocked unwanted calls.

Mr White, 95, said he was interested and asked if he could be sent further details.

He said: "When the person said he could set it up straight away I began to get a little suspicious," he said.

"Then I asked him to send me an invoice and I would pay it once it arrived.

"But then he said to set the service up I would need to give him my banking details over the phone. It was then that I knew it was scam and hung up on him.

"I'd like to make other people aware of what is obviously a scam and warn them not to give their details over the phone."

I have had a couple of telephone scams recently from a foreign voice saying they are calling from Microsoft. I have known about it for a while so I just tell them to get off my phone but some people will panic and let them into their computer. I got the number of the caller but would like to report him. I think they have been quiet for a while but are targeting us again.

Does anyone know of a department I can contact with this information.

Patsy: do an online search for ICO. You can report the calls on their website.
