Sainsbury's gets go-ahead on Stairfoot site

By Mike Cotton, Town Reporter Friday 18th July 2014

SAINSBURY'S has been given the go-ahead to open its first major supermarket in Barnsley creating up to 400 jobs.

The B and Q store at Stairfoot will close and be converted to a Sainsbury's, after a unanimous vote in favour from councillors at the town hall on Tuesday.

Planning officer Joe Jenkinson said: "It's in the public domain now that B and Q wants to consolidate this store with its Cortonwood store, which would mean a loss of up to 100 jobs. This (Sainsbury's) would bring in 400 jobs in terms of full-time equivalents."

Sainsbury's says all B and Q staff will be offered interviews for positions at the new store.

Hopefully it can be converted to a NETTO in due course, as Sainsbury's brings the NETTO brand and it's products back to the UK to compete with the German suermarkets which offer goods at a better price than big monopolistic uk supermarkets without compromising on quality.

And the likes of Barnsley based Jack Fultons could also open up a major store in Barnsley.

And at the same time the council could concentrate on making Barnsley one of the cheapest places to trade in the country for mere mortals, leading to the largest market in the country and re-establishing Barnsley as a thriving market town.
