Last ditch attempt to save hotel fails

By Nick Ward Thursday 3rd July 2014

LAST ditch attempts to save Ardsley House from closure have failed with the hotel set to close in two weeks.

The hotel's former owner Forestdale Hotels went into administration and the company was bought out by St James's Hotel Group which announced there would be a review to assess whether keeping it open would be viable.

Sean Brookes, group operations director at St James's Hotel Group revealed the review was complete and the news wasn't good. He concluded that there is no alternative but to close the hotel.

** A full interview with Sean Brookes about the plans for the site appears in the Barnsley Chronicle, dated July 4. **

If it isn't viable as a hotel what would the site be good for? Housing perhaps - either converting the hotel into apartments, or even worse, knocking it down. Maybe a care home? That would keep some jobs on the site.

I stayed there some years back and it was shabby then. If it was re-furbed and challenged the local Travelodge for prices it would work. Nowadays, if I need a hotel near Barnsley I go to Wortley Hall. It's cheaper, very ethical and worth the drive to get there.
