Reward offered over park vandalism

By Alison Burkinshaw, Royston Reporter Friday 27th June 2014

A £500 reward has been offered following the latest spate of vandalism in Royston park.

The ward alliance has put up the money for anyone who comes forward with information leading to the identification of the perpetrators.

At Royston gala on Sunday, the Barnsley Metropolitan Band had to perform on the grass as the stand was not safe due to the damage to the roof, which Coun Tracey Cheetham said was 'just not the same.'

She said: "The damage was definetely caused over the weekend.

"The stand was fine on Friday, and then when we went down to the gala on Sunday the roof had been smashed in.

"The stand has been vandalised before, and has since been repaired, but this can't keep happening.

"Proms in the Park will be there this summer and people from all over the village and further afield come and sit in the park and have a lovely time, but without the band stand it would just not be the same.

"The ward alliance urges anyone who knows anything about the acts of vandalism to contact the police."

Sadly the park is a disgrace. We've stopped going there to play now as the ground is constantly littered with broken glass

This sounded terrible, so I thought I'd go and have a look. There's some damage, about 8 shirt planks hanging loose, about 10 minutes work to remove these planks. It would take maybe forty five minutes with a battery drill and two dozen screws to fix them back safely. I have no truck with idiots causing damage, but when you look at the roof you can see several areas where it is rotting. Lets get this in perspective, it is minor damage.

Melvyn thomas can I ask if the council provided you with the materials and the tools would you carry out the work yourself if you are qualified to do so?
