Last-known Barnsley Normandy veteran dies

THE LAST known Normandy veteran in Barnsley has died, aged 89 - the day after the 70th anniversary of D Day.

 

The funeral of Harry Chappell, of Wilford Road, Athersley North, took place on Tuesday at the Church of the Nazarene.

 

Harry died on June 7 after developing Parkinson's Disease and other illnesses. He joined the army at 17 as a private.

 

Although he did not fight on the beaches on Normandy on D Day, he went back and forth the following month delivering vital supplies of food, clothes and ammunition.
