Reward offered after pensioner too scared to go home

By Katia Harston, Chief Reporter Friday 23rd May 2014
Harvey Clemit

THE BARNSLEY Chronicle is offering a cash reward for information that leads to the arrest and convinction of the masked men who burst into a pensioners home, sprayed liquid in his eyes and made off with his life savings.

Harvey Clemit, 80, is now too scared to return to the home he loves and is staying with family in Bournemouth after the terrifying attack in his home in Kendray, on Monday.

It left him extremely shaken and he is now refusing to return to Barnsley.

The Barnsley Chronicle is now offering a reward of £1,101 - £1 more than the attackers stole - for information that leads to the successful arrest and conviction of the culprits.

Editor Andrew Harrod said: "Maybe if we can get the thugs responsible off the streets, Harvey might eventually feel more comfortable about returning to the home he loves."

** We have a full, harrowing interview with Harvey - with details on how he fled from his home, barefoot and shirtless - in this week's Barnsley Chronicle. **

This is an absolute disgrace and congratulations to the Barnsley Chronicle for not only highlighting this poor old chaps situation but for offering the reward... Please if you know something help take these non human people of the streets of Barnsley

How sad that this man can be treated so appallingly. The scum who carried out this attack should be thoroughly ashamed, but they won't be as they obviously have no respect.Well done Barnsley Chronicle, let's hope someone comes forward with information to get the low life off the streets.

Posted by Karma I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 1:32pm

If I found out who had done it I would claim the reward

Posted by wayne I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 1:36pm

Just some sick people in the world how can anyone live with themselves doing things to a defenceless man or women. . I hope the person or persons that done this gets what they deserve. .

Posted by Carrie I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 1:37pm

My grandad lost his wife 2 months ago and now this- I really hope they are found! I'd string them up if I was still there! Targeting the defenseless is cruel and whoever they are should be ashamed!!!

Posted by wayne I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 1:43pm

Too right carrie just sick they are yellow doing this to that poor man ..wouldn't like it done to them

Posted by Katrina. I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 1:43pm

Scumbags want a long hefty sentence. What right has anyone to burst into someones home young or old, and rob them. Tough sentences need putting in place. Hope someone turns them in asap.

It may not be murder but this evil, cowardly act has probably had a worse effect as this poor chap has to now live with this while the scum who did it are probably laughing about it. There should be an equally evil punishment.

Posted by Jackie Evans I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 3:03pm

I hate this world your supposed to b able to feel safe on your home as its scary outside. What punishment do they get when you catch these morons as they kaigh at the law as it's so easy. This old man should b able to live out his remaining years happy and in his home not scared.

Posted by PETE CLEMIT I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 3:33pm

After watching these 2 ******** chase my dad out of his own home my blood is absolutely boiling - I am sure justice will be done!! Thanks everybody for your support and hopefully someone, even one of their family members will have the decency to turn this sick, evil, pathetic scumbags in!!!

Posted by rabble I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 3:36pm

Its up to the people who know this scum to do the right thing. Hand them over to the police, but they won't because they're probably the same. .if they knew shame it wouldn't have been committed in the 1st place so they should be classed as the worst kind of animals.

Posted by toby I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 4:28pm

I`m ashamed to breathe the same air as the vile cowards who carried out this sick attack...who on earth teaches these repulsive creatures morals?..hope the old guy comes back to barnsley safe and sound.

Posted by Dale I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 7:37pm

@LU You're right mate there should be a fundraiser. It won't help him recover from his ordeal but at least we can show him that the community at large are not all violent scumbags. If this were my parent/grandparent I would be raging.

Posted by ShannonElizabeth I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 7:53pm

This is actually disgusting! It makes my blood boil knowing that people could do that to such an innocent, defenseless man. They need to learn respect and just need to be found the scum bags!! Something needs to be done.

Posted by Mrs Sinclair I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 8:18pm

Please please sort out a collection for this poor man, these people are a disgrace to society. Let's help him to bring back the Barnsley faith in communities.

Posted by Charlotte I Fri 23rd May 2014 at 11:09pm

If I knew anything I'd give the reward money to Harvey. I hope he can stay calm and happy, whilst the Police must work hard for him.

Posted by Kathryn I Sat 24th May 2014 at 12:13am

I was born in Barnsley... Left when I was 19 just because of the low life mentality... Good to see community spirit is pulling and Facebook will help win the tug of war against these animals... Let's find them, let's stand behind Harvey big and strong.... Hang in there Harvey.... Facebook is huge... I'm in Australia and am gonna do all I can to get those thugs off the streets and you home safe x

I agree with all well wishes here. We are all on the path to old age and vulnerability, we should all be concerned for the things that happen to the elderly. I am from the Barnsley area but moved away about 36 years ago, I live in China at the moment and I find that this anti social behaviour is global. I sincerely hope justice prevails and this gentleman is able to return to familiar surroundings soon.

Posted by Bridget I Sat 24th May 2014 at 7:11am

I just want my grandad to be.happy and return home and continue being the happy loving man that we all know him by

I hope the police are pulling out all their stops to catch these scum. They need to go in prison for a very long time.

I hope it does not get filed away as another undetected crime and the Chronicle should keep pressurising the police for updates on the investigation

Posted by carolanne I Sat 24th May 2014 at 7:47pm

how on earth can us Barnsley folk keep putting up with trash like them, there will come a time when it with be down to us to sort these animals out. I hope Harvey gets over this very soon bless him xxx

Posted by Samantha Thompson I Sat 24th May 2014 at 10:14pm

N all that will happen when caught is around £100 compensation order that they will never pay n let off, or charged for one offence n the other 50 will be taken into consideration to massage the crime statistics, our justice system is a bloody joke for decent people!!

Posted by Sallie Taylor I Sun 25th May 2014 at 4:36am

How very sad to learn of such horrible things happen in a once tightly knit community. Its heat braking knowing this elderly gentleman is frightened to return home. Shame on the person [s] responsible. What goes around comes around.

I will add $100 if it leads to a conviction.

Posted by Beth I Sun 25th May 2014 at 9:03pm

Barnsley is getting worse. Poor man, I hope the low life scumbags are found and banged behind bars! thoughts to family and friends.

Posted by adam dudley stott I Sun 25th May 2014 at 9:25pm

I will add £500 for information leading to conviction, outraged!

Posted by danny parker I Mon 26th May 2014 at 10:05pm

im sure there are a few people in barnsley know the 2 robbers, do the decent thing and turn them in, you can do this privately and they will never know who it was. anyone with any information, no matter how small it is, or if they have cctv around the cedar crescent and any nearby streets please check it between 3.30am-4.30am on the 19th may 2014, it is believed these 2 will have been caught on many cctv cameras. if you are unsure how to retrieve cctv im sure the police will help, PLEASE DONT LET THEM GET AWAY WITH SCARING AN 80 YEAR OLD MAN OUT OF BARNSLEY WHERE HE HAS LIVED HIS WHOLE LIFE

Posted by Lee I Mon 26th May 2014 at 11:31pm

At the risk of sounding like an idealist I find it utterly unfathomable that this kind of thing can happen. Its such a shame that with harbour these reprebates in good decent society. I find it even more unfathomable that these two people dont feel an ounce of guilt or remorse. Very very sad boys!!!! Hope with that money you can buy enough elicit poison to do your selves in, saving police time annd tax payers money.

Posted by Adam frm doncaster I Tue 27th May 2014 at 8:36pm

Absolutely disgusting I'd be ashamed to know such filth! People like this have no place in society

Posted by Rita I Tue 27th May 2014 at 11:45pm

This will probably be of little comfort to this gentleman but, how nice it is to see some good come out of this horrific crime. The tide seems to be turning against the low-life in Barnsley. How good it is to see the community coming together in support of this obviously well loved victim. It is about time we took back our town and got a bit of pride back. Well done Barnsley!

The problem is this. Lots of us know who did this including the police and some of those who commented. It is not a name the police need but PROOF.

Posted by paul clemit I Sat 20th Feb 2016 at 11:01am

Old story now and it seems the police have let it slip to the bottom of the case file. If anyone ever does get a whisper of who it was...please let me know...I have been told names and one of the names has come up quite a few times, but a name is just a name, if there's no proof. I am Paul by the way, one of Harvey's sons. I can be found on Facebook. Thank you in advance for any confidential information you can supply me with.
