Firefighter protest over Barnsley cuts

FIREFIGHTERS protested outside the Fire Authority over proposals to withdraw an engine from Barnsley station.

More than 50 firefighters and union officials protested against loss of the station's second pump, but it was taken out of service hours after the decision was approved at the meeting on Monday.

In an internal blog, chief fire officer Jamie Courtney said he had no option but to get rid of the engine unless the trial of a new shift system was introduced - but this was challenged by the Fire Brigades Union.

This is disgusting, with the M1 adjacent and frequent road accidents as well as fires and other incidents requiring (a) fire tender(s), there will be tragedies arising where person(s) will be trapped in blazing properties without help available. - Mary Horswill, Birdwell
