Musical teen outshines competition

By Dan Greaves, Royston Reporter Tuesday 12th March 2013
Colin Shiers, 13, is hoovering up awards at music festivals across the country.

A teenager from Cudworth is making a name for himself performing at competitive music festivals around the country.

Colin Shiers, 13, of Sunny Bank Drive, has won competitions for his singing ability, including coming first in his class at this year's prestigious Mrs Sunderland music festival in Huddersfield.

According to his mum, music teacher Patricia, the Horizon Community College pupil has been approached by a number of choirs and singing groups following his performance at Huddersfield last month.

Patricia said: "He's always been very musical. He asked to learn to play the cornet when he was eight after taking part in a brass assembly at school."

As well as singing, Colin is learning to play the keyboard and plays trumpet for the Barnsley Town concert band.

The talented teen will perform at the Rothwell competitive music festival later this month.

Patricia added: "He sings all the time and practices every day. We're absolutely thrilled to bits with how well he's doing.

"We couldn't be more proud."
