Housing plan for Oakwell car park

Oakwell

Houses could be built on the main car park at Barnsley FC's Oakwell ground if plans are given the go-ahead.

The residential development has been applied for by Oakwell Community Assets Limited whose directors are Couns Alan Gardiner and Linda Burgess, Barnsley FC owner Patrick Cryne and its secretary is Andrew Frosdick, Barnsley Council's borough secretary.

A residential development of 12 two-storey houses, which would be in three blocks of four units, is proposed for the southernmost part of the main car park, off Grove Street.

Replacement car parking with 194 spaces is then planned to be created on unused land to the north-east of the main football ground.

A design and access statement prepared by Oakwell Community Assets Limited states that location is in the council's unitary development plan and suggests it would suitable for car parking.

Plans show the houses would be set back in the site to allow for car parking at the front of the houses, and private gardens would be provided at the rear.

It states: "The main specific issue is the need to keep access to the residential development separate from access to the football club and the car parking to be kept separate."

A supporting statement for the development reports that the overall level of car parking on the site will remain 'more than adequate' for the football club and its associated activities.

Considering the people involved maybe the headline should read "Barnsley councillors apply for planning permission."

If Barnsley councillors wish to argue that they, like everyone, are allowed directorships, they must first explain why they have a disproportionately higher number of them.

Once again the smell of rodent fills our nostrils.

I think this article raises more questions than answers! Who is Oakwell comunity assets Limited, how and when was it formed and for what purpose? Who would benefit financially.etc...

From a practical point of view Access to the current car park is poor and always has been, I think access to the ground/car parks from Harborr hills dual carriageway would improve access/exit and should the monies raised be put to good use then maybe they may get the public's blessings...Would be great if the journalist could provide some detail to this story..

The original company Barnsley Football Club Ltd should never have been disbanded allowing the new owners to take over.

At the time in 2002 the clubs assets (mainly the football ground and the adjoining land) far outweighed the clubs debt. Therefore the original company should never have been classed as 'insolvent' and consequently liquidated.

The original shareholders lost all their shares with no justified explanation. This potentially fraudulent matter should be investigated.

Patrick Cryne is currently awaiting trial for fraud this October. Barnsley Council should be very carefull regarding any dealings with him..Furthermore now that the club is out of receivership isn't about time the council sells its interest in the club. Tax payers money should be used for libraries and street repairs not bailing out multi-millionaires like Cryne.???
