Hundreds may be saved in energy switch scheme

Residents could save hundreds of pounds on gas and electricity bills by joining Barnsley's first energy switching scheme.

The 'YORswitch Cheaper Energy Together' scheme works on the idea that the more people band together, the more bargaining power they have with energy companies to negotiate the best deal.

In a similar national switch last June, customers each saved an average of £223 per year.

The Barnsley scheme will be managed by Berneslai Homes for Barnsley Council.

Berneslai Homes said energy bills were causing 'immense financial hardship' with one in four households struggling to heat their homes. Bills had risen by an average of eight per cent this winter.

On April 9, energy companies will offer their cheapest energy deal based on the number of households that register interest.

Householders then get a personal offer showing how much money they can save and are given 30 days to decide whether to accept.

Anyone interested should register before April 9 at www.berneslaihomes.co.uk or phone 787891. They can also email YORswitch@barnsley.gov.uk
