But now the five-year-old rottweiler is itching to go for walkies after shedding a quarter of her body weight.

Owner Wayne Houlston, 53, of Priory Road, Lundwood, put her on a strict diet with the help of animal charity PDSA.

"She was big from being too kind and friendly," he said.

"Every day she'd wait at the gate for the school kids to go past and hey would give her crisps. We'd give her treats too and didn't notice how big she'd got as we saw her every day."

Molly, who has shed nearly three stone, has won a commendation from the PDSA Pet Fit Club for her slimming efforts.

"All I wanted was her health to improve and that's what has happened," said Wayne.

"I couldn't have done it without PDSA, she would have had to have been destroyed.

"Now her energy levels have doubled and she loves going for walks. It's given her a new lease of life."
