Searches at four town centre pubs yesterday were part of an ongoing drug investigation, police confirmed this morning.

Police vehicles were parked outside Chambers and Igloo, both off Peel Square, and Retro Bar and Voudou on Wellington Street.

The focus of the investigation appeared to be on Retro. Plain clothed officers were seen entering the building with evidence sacks at about noon on Thursday.

Staff at Chennell's, on the corner of Wellington Street and Pitt Street, said police sealed off Chambers at about 10am before heading to the other bars.

A force spokesman said: "Police undertook a number of searches in the Barnsley and Sheffield area yesterday in relation to an ongoing police drugs investigation.

"Six people were arrested and are in police custody."
