A group of nurses are organising a firewalk to raise money for a new lounge in the dementia ward at Barnsley Hospital.
It will give patients somewhere more relaxed to sit during the day and could also be used in the evenings.
Staff on the ward want to raise money to convert a former office into the dementia lounge. Ward sister Alyson Ripley said: “Hopefully the patients will feel more relaxed, as they will be out of the business of the acute medical ward.”
She said as well as renovating the room new equipment was needed for the lounge. About 35 nurses, including some from other wards, and members of the public are taking part in the event.
The firewalking will take place on Sunday August 26, at Shaw Lane Cricket Club. The lounge will be run in association with the Alzheimer’s Society.
