Warning about council tax scam

By Ed Elliot, Penistone Reporter Monday 30th July 2012

Penistone councillor Robert Barnard is warning residents to be wary of a council tax scam.

Coun Barnard said a number of homeowners had contacted him because they were receiving telephone calls from people claiming to be part of the council and offering to reduce council tax bands.

He said he was keen to remind residents that council tax bands are dealt with by the Valuation Office Agency — an executive agency of Revenue and Customs — and not Barnsley Council.

Coun Barnard said: “Various people call offering to get the home owner’s council tax reduced and charge for the privilege — even if they’re not successful.”

He added: “There is a clear warning on the VOA website about this.”

Here's another council tax scam. They charge me £1250 per year to empty my bin once a fortnight. Now what else do I get from them...let me think...ehh...nothing. Oh I forgot, they do provide me with a brilliant display of flowers on some of the roundabouts in the area. Come to think of it, the Labour Councillors do send me a Christmas card every year. I wonder, does my council tax pay for the card? Wait a minute, how ungrateful of me - If I want any council bumpf translating into Urdu, Polish or Scottish, they will do if for me gratis. Oh joy.
