Two held over Carlton death smash

By adam civico, Assistant Editor Monday 30th July 2012

A post-mortem investigation will be carried out today after a 22-year-old Lundwood man died when his car smashed into a lamppost.

The collision occurred when a car being driven by the man lost control on Industry Road, Carlton, police said.

The post-mortem is due to be carried out today and an inquest is expected to be opened and adjourned tomorrow.

The collision occurred at 10.25pm on Friday, 50m before the junction with St Anne's Drive, Carlton.

A force spokesman said: "It is reported that a blue Piaggio NRG motor scooter was travelling from Carlton Road, along Industry Road toward Fish Dam Lane.

"It is believed a blue Peugeot 306 driven by the 22-year-old man from Lundwood was travelling in the same direction and approached the rear of the motor scooter and overtook the scooter on the offside.

"It is reported that as the Peugeot approached the left hand bend the vehicle loses control and leaves the carriageway to the nearside and collides with a concrete lamp post, causing extensive damage to the car."

The Peugeot driver suffered fatal injuries. Four passengers, all from Barnsley, were also injured.

A girl, 17, has life-threatening injuries and a boy, 16, suffered serious injuries including a broken leg and pelvis. Both are being treated in Northern General Hospital, Sheffield.

A man, 19 suffered a back injury and a woman, 25, had whiplash.

Two men, aged 19 and 21, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Police have not traced the scooter driver.

Witnesses or anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting incident 1401, of July 27.

Tragic story and waste of a young life.....and causing serious injury to others.Don't quite understand the story from the report. The scooter driver has not been traced. It tells of the 5 people in the car but says two other men have been arrested so was a third vehicle involved ? Hope they can get to the bottom of this to help friends and family come to terms with this sad incident.
