Town hall park plans revealed

Town Hall park

This artist's impression shows how a new park at the side of the town hall could look.

It's hoped a £1.6m project to revamp areas surrounding the town hall will encourage investment and growth in Barnsley.

Plans have been submitted by Barnsley Council for the redevelopment of the Lancaster Gate car park, at the side of the town hall, and garden areas in front of the building.

Coun Roy Miler says it will provided an impressive link to the Experience Barnsley museum as well as stimulating growth in the town centre.

All the detail is on page three of today's paper, but what do you think of the plans? Leave a comment below.

Loss of more parking spaces in town. What are plans for nativity in front of town hall - will that be left in place. Not sure how a bit of a park beside the museum will stimulate trade and investment.

Why on earth does Barnsley Council need to spend this money. They would be better focusing the money to make all the councillors redundant. Hess people are paid a full salary compared to people on the street in our work.

Money thats left give to the Elderley sick and genuinely disabled people of the town. we need the Town Hall outside do up like we need local councillors NOT NOT NOT

It would be better getting on with the overdue rebuilding the town centre as promised. We went through all the hype of new plans for the new market and new shopping precinct with consultations in the 'Remaking Barnsley' exercise. Buildings have laid empty for years making the town look deprived and neglected. If you want to attract business to a town, you need a town with decent facilities and not just charity shops.

Barnsley has fallen so far behind other towns it is holding it back against competition from other areas. Gardens are nice, but isn't it just painting over the cracks?

They've picked one of the areas in the town centre least in need of a revamp to spend 1.6 million on. The parking that is there is essential for the shops that are in that area. The main shopping precinct is where the money needs to be spent, not here. People aren't shopping in Barnsley as there just isn't the right selection of shops as no one want's a short lease while the decision to rebuild is continually being stalled. Consequently the major part of Barnsley shoppers money is being spent in Meadowhall and Leeds Get the Department Store built and build the core again from there. This will help to entice some established names Retail savvy is what's needed to generate growth in the town centre, not a park.
