Ice warning: Take extra care, Barnsley Council has urged residents.

Motorists and pedestrians have been urged to take extra care amid predictions snow and sleet will cause chaos across the borough.

Barnsley Council on Thursday morning said its fleet of gritters would be out - but admitted wide areas of the borough would still be at risk.

The Met Office has said snow will move south-eastwards across the region. Sub-zero temperatures mean it is likely any snow or rain will freeze instantly on untreated roads and footpaths, a council spokesman said.

"We will be out gritting as usual, but if this freezing occurs, wide areas of the borough will be affected beyond the normal gritting routes, meaning extra care will be needed."
