Barnsley MP quizzes PM on NHS changes
Wednesday 1st February 2012
Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis quizzed David Cameron at Prime Minster's Questions in Parliament.
Mr Jarvis said last winter 200 people every day died from preventable cold weather-related illnesses. "In Barnsley instead of being able to focus resources on the dangers of cold weather we have had to set aside £17 million for an undemocratic, top down re-organisation of the NHS.
"Is this really a responsible use of public money."
The Prime Minister replied saying cold weather payments had been maintained at the maximum level - and would be for 'all years'. He added there were 4,000 more doctors and 620 more midwives working in the NHS since the coalition government took power.
"We are treating 100,000 more patients a month. That's what is actually happening."
He said If Mr Jarvis looked at what was happening at Barnsley hospital, rather than repeating 'what trade unions are telling him' that is what he would see.
