Cutting it

Celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton returned to Barnsley to pass on tips to students at Barnsley College. Kim Little reports.

Celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton visited Barnsley College on Monday to speak to the students about his career.

Four volunteers from the college were also able to have their hair cut by the expert as part of a demonstration for the students about new cutting techniques. Andrew, who first trained at the College and is from Royston, now regularly features on television on shows such as Ten Years Younger and was creative director at Saks and Toni and Guy before opening his salon in Covent Garden.

He hoped to pass his experience on to the students during his visit.

"I think it's extremely important for young learners to understand the opportunities that are available in hairdressing.

"There are so many areas to get in to within hair, from fashion shows, to salons, to TV, they need to understand it's not just about the same old techniques.

"My advice to trainees is to never accept the standard of okay because if something is just okay then its just not good enough."

Sarah Seaman, head of hairdressing at the college, said it was a brilliant day for the students and the staff, and Andrew was inspirational.
