Man held over Thurnscoe stab death

Detectives are quizzing a man who was arrested on suspicion of murder following a stabbing.

Philip Alan Smith, 36, died of stab wounds following an incident in Thurnscoe on Saturday.

One suspect is in custody and officers are continuing to question him. A further three men, arrested on suspicion of violent disorder have been released on bail.

Mr Smith, of Stotfold Drive, Thurnscoe, was injured at about 4.30pm following a disturbance near the junction of Church Street and Houghton Road. He was taken to Barnsley Hospital but died.

Det Supt Andy Thompson said extensive enquiries had been made. He added: "I still wish to hear from anyone who has any information or who witnessed the disturbance in Thurnscoe on Saturday afternoon.”
