'I can't pay for my son's funeral'

By Mike Cotton, Town Reporter Friday 8th April 2011
Grieving dad John Moorhouse

A grieving dad is devastated because he can't afford to pay for his son's funeral.

John Moorhouse has been told he doesn't qualify for state help with the costs of his son Darren's funeral, because he is on the wrong type of benefit.

Darren, 26, died last Friday at Barnsley Hospital after having a seizure and developing an infection.

John, 52, of Pontefract Road, Lundwood, said: "All I want to do is give my lad a proper send off, but I can't and it's killing me. The funeral's booked for Wednesday, but I don't know how I'm going to pay for it."

The Chronicle has learned that 'thousands' contact the council every year struggling to meet funeral costs.

Full story in this week's town edition. If anyone is able to help Mr Moorhouse, contact the funeral director, BM & C Howard Funeral Services, of Doncaster Road on 249 911.
