Staff try to save butcher's bacon

A MAN suspected of breaking into a butcher’s shop and taking over £100 of meat was later caught allegedly selling it across the street.

H Potter and Son, of High Street, Wombwell, was broken into in the middle of the night through the rear ground window of the shop.

A man stole £100 of bacon, £25 of gammon and £20 of charity box cash and loose change but his movements were caught on CCTV footage.

The next day Potter’s staff recognised a man selling what they believed to be the stolen goods outside the Horseshoe pub and carried out a citizen’s arrest.

Owner Neil Potter declined to comment, but a police spokesman confirmed the burglary took place at 11pm on July 7 and a man had been detained outside the Horse-shoe the following day. Two men have been arrested in connection with the theft and one has been released on bail.

Police are continuing with their enquiries.
