Holgate and garage will go to make way for £35m school

HOLGATE school and the Shell Petrol Station on Dodworth Road will be demolished to make way for a £35 million school under plans approved by the council this week.

The 2,200-pupil Advanced Learning Centre which will replace Holgate and Kingstone schools was given outline planning permission on Tuesday.

It involves the demolition of the Shell petrol station which is on land which used to belong to clothing firm SR Gents. The land is in the hands of PricewaterhouseCoopers which acted as the receivers when the factory closed.

The council says it will try to buy the site either through negotiation or a compulsory purchase order (CPO).

It is part of the £1 billion scheme to rebuild all secondary schools in Barnsley. Five schemes are already under construction. The Kingstone and Holgate replacement is in the last phase of works expected to be completed by 2013.

Another £35 million school to replace Wombwell high School and Darfield Foulstone School was also approved at Tuesday's meeting.

The Wombwell and the Town Centre ALCs are the largest and most expensive in the BSF scheme.
