SHAMED law firm Raleys is preparing to refund thousands of former miners who had money deducted from compensation claims — but only if they write to request it.
Letters offering 'conciliatory payments' will be sent in relation to 22,000 claims handled by the firm — potentially costing more than £6m.
Managing partner Carol Gill said she anticipated the figure would be lower because most clients would not want a refund.
Each of the claims in question was handled by Raleys under an agreement with the NUM. Deductions of up to £750 were taken from successful compensation claims. A total of £6.1m was paid to the union under the agreement.
